'Wanna Get Lucky?' National Initiative

The Joe Niekro Foundation has embarked on a national initiative called Wanna Get Lucky? This t-shirt campaign is designed to educate the public on the importance of early detection. Our effort to increase awareness of brain aneurysms in this country is unprecedented, as public awareness of brain aneurysms is limited. Research shows that as many as one in fifteen Americans will develop a cerebral aneurysm. Currently, 10-15% of individuals with a rupture will die before reaching the hospital and over 50% will die within the first thirty days after rupture. Of those who survive, over half suffer permanent neurological deficit. We can affect the outcome of ruptures by educating the public to go to the emergency room immediately, or to take a friend straight to the emergency room, upon experiencing the classic “worst sudden headache of their lives.” Some individuals will indeed “get lucky” through prompt detection and treatment of their aneurysm.
